CATCHING UP
Inspiring Youth by Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Mike Harris
This summer CatRock students hiked to the Cat Rock overlook on the Appalachian Trail where they learned about Dr. Mike Harris, co-founder of the Cat Rock Gang and inspiration for CatRock Ventures.
Dr. Mike Harris was a psychologist and social activist who used adventure-based challenges to help kids in NYC who had been adversely impacted by gang violence realize their inner strengths and full potential. His “Cat Rock Gang,” named after the summit of the group’s regular hiking trail, provided mentorship, outdoor-based learning and growth opportunities, and a supportive community to help youth overcome personal and environmental challenges.
Craig Meisner, the Executive Director and co-founder of CatRock Ventures, and mentor-volunteers led a group of 15 new recruits to the Cat Rock overlook to celebrate Dr. Mike Harris’ birthday and acknowledge his legacy. Students learned about Dr. Harris’ passion for social justice, increasing access to the outdoors, and bringing people from different backgrounds together in natural settings to help them find common ground.
The May 4th celebration at the overlook reinforced what many students learn early on — CatRock is more than outdoor adventure. As Christopher L., alumni leader and part-time program associate points out, it’s family. “Joining CatRock was the best decision I ever made. You’re not just going to make friends. It’s family. It’s forever.”
CatRock continues to bring Bronx youth from different backgrounds together each year, helping them strengthen and build support systems as they navigate their journeys through high school and beyond. The CatRock’s family-like culture is inspired by Dr. Harris’ work and lives on through the passionate team of staff, program leaders, and mentors.
